South African Golf Courses - Fancourt Links
Before the Gary Player Design Team began work on the third course
at the famed Fancourt, their brief was simple - to build the best
course in South Africa, one that would draw the attention of the
world. Soon after this mega-budget project got under way, it became
clear that this objective would be achieved. Although Humewood
in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town's Milnerton (Atlantic Beach) were
previously the only examples of links courses in South Africa,
they have now been joined by a true heavyweight. Thousands of
tons of earth were moved to create giant dunes and the bunkering
is as fine as can be found anywhere, some cavernous, others tiny,
much in the St Andrews mould. Designer Gary Player had this to
say about the Fancourt Links: "Links golf is how the game
originated and at this new course we'll be taking South Africans
back to the roots of golf and letting them play a British Open
of their own."
